In the middle of this chapter, Paul uses a play on words in the Greek that is somewhat lost in our English translations. "Do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation (wastefulness), but be filled with the Spirit" (vs 18). The Greek words for "getting drunk" and "be filled" sound very similar. Okay, cool. But what point is Paul trying to make?
Look at verses 15-17: "Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is." The will of the Lord is for us to be filled with the Spirit! When we are filled by the Spirit—when we are aware of his presence in our lives—we will make wise choices. And we know that pleases God.
So how do we do that? Verse one, "Be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God." It always starts with Jesus. How will you respond to what Jesus has done in your life?
