1 Corinthians 12

It is clear from this chapter that the Corinthians had some knowledge of the gifts given by the Spirit, but it would seem that they believed some gifts were better than others, which made some believers more valuable to the church. Paul opposes that position by offering a comparison of the body of Christ to a human body, and he says that God actually arranged it that way (vv 18-19). Two things stand out to me:

First, every follower of Christ has been uniquely gifted by the Holy Spirit. Each has been given a talent which they can use to bring glory to God. These gifts are not given to us so that we can make much of ourselves; they are given for the good of others, to build each other up in the Lord.

Second, every member of the body of Christ is needed. "The eye cannot say to the hand, 'I have no need of you,' nor again the head to the feet, 'I have no need of you'" (vs 21). Eyes are needed for seeing, and feet are needed for walking. In the same way, each member of the body of Christ has a gift that is needed for the body to function properly.

So what gift(s) have you been given? If you don't know yet, I would encourage you to begin serving in some capacity at your church, or simply consider what you are passionate about. Many times God gives us a desire to pursue something like music, or preparing food, or playing with kids. As you pursue what it is you are passionate about, God may develop in you a gift which you can use for the good of others.

Imagine the impact if each member of the body of Christ realized that they had something to offer, and that it was needed for the benefit of the whole body!
