We were adopted as sons of God when God put the Spirit of his Son into our hearts. But Paul says it's more than simply being rescued from a life of slavery, Look at verse 9: "But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of of the world?"
To "be known" by someone is far more than to "know" them. If you know someone, you have met them, and maybe you know a lot about them and you could have even spent years getting to know them. Being known though, is an entirely different experience. It means you are now in a position of vulnerability. It means you've invited someone to examine your inmost being, and you're trusting them with power to love you or reject you.
Maybe, like me, you've spent years of your life getting to know God, filling your head with knowledge of who he is. Perhaps, like I was, you are perplexed at how you can know so much about God, and yet not feel close to him. But just knowing about God is not connecting with him. To truly be known by God and feel close to him, you have to get your heart involved.
I'm going to write a lot more on this as we go along, but for now I just want you to ask yourself, "What is my experience of being known by God?"
